The most poignant thing I've ever seen on the Internet.

If you're a US citizen, especially one with any ties to military personnel (Marines particularly), you may want to make sure you're alone when you view this. I don't want to give too much else away

It's a photo essay that won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography, and rightfully so.

Take in each photo and read the caption before moving on to the next one.

If you're left wanting to know more, here is the associated Digital Journalist Story, the original Rocky Mountain News feature, and an animated slide show with voiceover.

As I write this, I realize I'm fortunate That I'll soon be honoring a former US Marine on Father's Day - and he'll be there.

What could have been...

Sigh - but for a few Floridians who can't count.

Alas, it's but an SNL cold open sketch (featuring the real Al Gore).

But now that he's become one of the richest men in the world by cashing in on Google - hey - a guy can dream!

There's a prize for that?!?!

My parents love to tell the story that they got off easy for many years of my childhood when they'd tell me I could go anywhere I wanted for my birthday and without hesitation I'd blurt out "Krystal!!". Well a five year old can only eat so many dime hamburgers, and I've more than made up for my early unpretentiousness with yearly trips to the likes of Atlanta landmarks The Renaissance Waverly Sunday 500 item buffet and Fogo de Chao (a Churrascaria).

But Krystal's always been with me. But for the fact that they're absolutely toxic little grease bombs in the long term, I'm sure I would have figured out a way by now to have them delivered via pneumatic tube to my home at the press of a button.

And now I find out not only that there's a Krystal eating contest, but the record is 42 Krystals in 8 minutes! I can't help but wonder how someone, given unlimited quantities of Krystals could eat ONLY 42 in 8 minutes. I'm pretty sure I could inhale 42 Krystals in a single breath ("What's that giant sucking sound?" Ross Perot, 1992). I am seriously going to enter this contest. I don't know what the prize is (details to follow), but I'll go ahead and plan on spending it. And really - 42 free Krystals is kind of its own prize, don't you think?

So - and as much for my own reference as anything... The Krystal Square Off 2006.

Wonder if you bring your own cardiologist?

Crou-sade

I like Ruby Tuesday - a LOT.

Odd for someone who's primarily carnivorous, but my favorite thing is their salad bar. And the best thing about the salad bar has always been the croutons. Well they changed them a while back and they're really just not the same. I keep going back, and it's still good, but every time I find myself grumbling about the croutons.

Then I ran across a site called planetfeedback.com - a site where you can write letters to corporations and they're collected and shared with other users. It's a neat site, and of course led to the question "If I were going to rail against some big corporate injustice what would it be?"

Croutons!

I was rather surprised to look the next day and see my crouton rant had made the front page! Maybe it truly IS the "little things" that count.

Cheers!

Urban Dead - an addictive little online game

I'm not what you'd call a "gamer", but I have found a nice little distraction that's good for a few minutes of fun a day (You only get 50 moves a day - so no worry about getting too addicted)...

In death, the city stirs. Its borders still locked down after a sudden government quarantine last year, Malton's trapped civilians make their way through the derelict buildings, surviving the winter to rebuild their fragmented society from the rubble upwards. Military cleanup squads patrol the empty streets, stationed in the city for the long haul, while embedded scientific groups continue the experiments that brought them here.

And the dead rise up and thrive, trailing through the ruined streets of the city, milling between buildings and clawing through makeshift barricades and diversions, reclaiming the city as their own.

Urban Dead is a browser-based zombie apocalypse MMORPG.

Getting Started with BitTorrent

People ask all the time where I get (legal) software, music, TV, and movies. For most part, the answer is "torrent files". There is a wide variety of all sorts of content available via torrent files.

This is a two part process. The first thing you need is a client. This is the software that processes the files, much like a browser processes HTML and other web content, and e-mail client processes e-mail, etc. My favorite is utorrent from http://www.utorrent.com/ for Windows, but torrent clients are available for all operating systems.

There's a more complete tutorial at http://www.idealog.us/2006/04/how_to_start_us.html

Next - you need torrent files. Once your BitTorrent client is set up, this is the fun part! This is where you get your media, applications, etc...

Here are some of the larger sites. Looking for something specific? Search more than one!

isoHunt - IRC and Bit Torrent search engine
btjunkie - the largest bittorrent database
mininova : the ultimate bittorrent source!
NewNova.org - the Universal BitTorrent Source - Movies, Music, TV Shows, Anime and much more
The Pirate Bay - The worlds largest BitTorrent tracker
BitTorrent
TorrentReactor.Net - The most active torrents on the web
Torrentspy.com - The Largest BitTorrent Search Engine
OiNK (This one is for high-quality, full-album music and software only, and requires an invitation. If you know me, feel free to ask!)

If you have any you'd like to share - please add them to the comments below!

Happy Downloading!

PS/Update: I'll add more sites as I find them...

Another Favorite Photo Site

Part Deux - the weird wild and interesting. Another Livejournal photo gallery in the same vein as the "riot" site below. Same disclaimers apply - It might be a puppy, it might be a nude woman or ten. But there's something uniquely interesting about most of them. While photo humor and fascination transcends language, the owner is Russian, and a very few of the photos depend on you being able to read Russian to "get it", but that's maybe only 1%, and the rest are universally remarkable on some level or another, from humor to erotica to shock to cuteness, to whatever...

"woot" indeed!

Just picked up a handful of these babies:

Western Digital Caviar 250GB Hard Drive

$49.99+ $5 shipping

Gotta love woot.com sometimes!

Added to my "Athlon 1800 made of garbage", I'll hit a 1TB music/video/web server for $200

Now - to RAID or not to RAID?

woot!

My favorite photo site

I like to check in every few days. Somehow they manage to round up some of the most interesting pictures on the internet. I once sat and looked at every one. Fascinating stuff.

WARNING!!!! The photos are varied in nature, and are usually presented for their artistic value, photographic quality, humor, or interesting subject matter. NOT ALL PHOTOS ARE APPROPRIATE to everyone's taste, and include shots, which range from sad to disturbing to nude to outright sexual - along with the uplifting, funny, and benign.

That being said, Take a look if you like...
